From Our Head of School Erica Piche

Despite the best efforts of her teachers, my daughter struggled to learn and it was clear that public school was not designed for children with her learning profile. She had enormous potential but could not thrive in a one size fits all curriculum. Her excitement for learning and self-confidence were quickly dwindling. My daughter needed a highly individualized school with customized programs taught by top experts in learning differences. She needed an environment that did not hastily put labels and limits on children, but instead was dedicated to assessing and understanding her unique sets of strengths and weaknesses in order to access her full potential. She needed Winston Prep.

The Winston Prep School New Jersey campus opened in 2014, and my 4th-grade daughter was one of the original 32 students. Our campus is currently home to students from many school districts of New Jersey, as well as students from the boroughs of New York City, Westchester County, and other independent schools.

Winston Prep students have been diagnosed with language processing disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities, ADHD, and may struggle with organizational, executive functioning, social pragmatic, expressive language, or reading comprehension difficulties. They are brought together by their struggle developing the skills that lead to independence and are supported by a talented and diverse faculty that is dedicated to helping them in the journey to becoming life-long, independent learners.

Through the years, my daughter evolved into the thriving student she is today because of Winston’s educational philosophy and talented team of professionals. They allowed her to flourish as a learner and believe in herself. After years of feeling misunderstood and unable to learn, she finally felt understood and capable. This was the direct result of Winston Prep’s unique ways, such as grouping students by their learning profiles, concentrating on remediation rather than accommodations, an emphasis on developing the Qualities of a Sustainable and Independent Learner, the Continuous Feedback Process, our 1:1 Focus Program, and the faculty’s deep clinical understanding of every student.

My connection with Winston Preparatory School was a powerful one from the start, but my professional knowledge paired with the profound impact it had on my daughter cemented my belief that there are no replacements for a customized, individualized, research-based education. My position as Head of School is a professional and personal honor. With that, it is my mission to reach as many students as possible struggling with learning differences and provide them with a top-notch educational experience, and I cherish the opportunity to work with leaders in the field of special education to do so.
