A Research-Based Teaching and Learning Model

What is unique to Winston Prep is that we connect research with practice, which allows us to approach each individual student and truly discover their learning needs. We are able to create a successful educational environment where students are learning to become independent. Winston Preparatory School, founded in 1981 in New York City serving students ages 8-21 has grown to include a network of campuses including Winston Transitions in New York City and San Francisco, CA, Winston Online, and Winston in College. Winston Prep serves over 600 students per year providing them with a highly individualized, holistic, and responsive education through our nationally-recognized model of teaching and learning.

What We Do

Our model is based on an in-depth understanding of each student, which results in grouping by learning profile and precisely designed programming. Winston Prep accomplishes this through its Continuous Feedback System. We assess and understand both learning challenges and strengths, and develop individualized programs and support services for each student. We continually assess how a student is responding to their skill development plan and adjust our teaching approach and the plan based on how the student is responding and progressing toward their development goals. It is within this process that students learn through explicit instruction and reinforcement to internalize this process and become the authors of their own continuous assessment and feedback process.

Skills That Matter

Based on our own Lives Over Time research and research in the field, we’ve identified the Qualities of a Sustainable and Independent Learner. These eight qualities are what really matter and are correlated with postsecondary success and independence. Research and experience demonstrate that these are not exclusively inherent qualities but skills to be developed and employed.
