Thank you for your interest in Winston Preparatory School. You are invited to participate in an online Open House to hear more about our educational philosophy and program. In the Open House menu below, please select a campus for available dates and to register. If you’d like to start the application prior to participating in an online Open House, click the ‘Apply Now’ button below to begin the application process. Winston Prep is one of the many schools using SchoolAdmin, which allows families to schedule admissions events and complete the application online.

STEP ONE: Complete Application Materials | Current evaluation (within two years):

  • Online Portal Account
  • Current (within 2 years) Psychoeducational or Neuropsychological Evaluation with cognitive, achievement and projective testing (see examples below). Please submit a copy. Do not submit the original document.
    • Cognitive function: WISC lV (Wechsler lntelligence Scale for Children)
    • Academic Achievement: WJ-lll Achievement (Woodcock Johnson IV) or WIAT IV (Wechsler lndividual Achievement Test)
    • Projective Psychological Function: Rorschach and/or the Thematic Apperception Test and/or BASC (Behavioral
      Assessment Scale for Children)
  • Application for the 2021-2022 Academic Year
  • $ 100.00 Non-Refundable Application Fee
  • Completed Parental Statement
  • School Transcripts (Sent directly from your child’s current placement.)

STEP TWO: Attend an Online Open House

Attendance at an online Open House is encouraged for prospective parents/guardians. During an online Open House, you will have the opportunity to hear more about our educational philosophy and participate in a question and answer session.

STEP THREE: Application Review

WPS admits students on a rolling basis, throughout the school year. After an application is received, it is reviewed by the Director of Admissions to determine if WPS can accommodate and remediate the student’s learning differences.

STEP FOUR: Interview and School Visit (in person or virtual)

If deemed appropriate, you will then be contacted to schedule an in person or virtual school visit for your child where we will conduct further testing, arrange a classroom visit and coordinate an interview with a School Dean. The testing portion of the interview may include portions of the WIAT-III, KTEA-3, TONI-4, QRI-5, and/or CTOPP-2.

STEP FIVE: Decision and Notification

Families are informed of admissions decisions via phone and by mail and are encouraged to contact the Director of Admissions to discuss the reasons why the student may or may not be appropriate for WPS. If a student is a good fit for the school, but there are currently no spots available, the student will be placed on a waitlist and will be notified immediately if a spot becomes available within the group that is a match for the student’s learning profile. Families who are accepted are sent a contract and financial aid forms, and are encouraged to return the signed contract with a deposit within two weeks of notification.

WPS accepts students with average to superior intellectual potential; however, WPS does not accept students with primary behavioral or emotional symptoms.


The admissions process at WPS seeks to identify students with specific learning disorders for whom we can help facilitate the achievement of their independence and actualization of their potential. WPS students have a wide variety of cognitive and academic profiles, including students who are dyslexic, have difficulties with expressive and receptive language, have non-verbal learning disabilities, and those who have difficulty with executive functions.

While WPS is committed to serving students with learning disabilities, we are also committed to serving a diverse population of students. WPS accepts students of all races, nationalities and ethnic groups, and the school works hard to maintain diversity in terms of gender, educational background, and socioeconomic status. WPS is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Admissions policies at WPS conform to the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) Principles of Good Practice for Admission to Independent Schools.

Criteria for Admission

In terms of criteria for admissions, a specific admissions checklist does not exist, as WPS students present with various skills and abilities along the academic and social -emotional continuum. The educational philosophy is to serve a wide range of students as individual learners with individual needs; therefore a specific checklist requiring maximum and minimum scores and evaluation results would not be an accurate determinant of success at WPS. Despite the individualized approach, there are some general expectations of the applicants, including that they are diagnosed with a learning disability, that they do not have a primary emotional or behavioral diagnosis, and that their cognitive and academic profile matches that of our current students.
